Playful and Naughty Puns



                California somehow bottoms out on small-business-friendliness surveys but when I look around San Francisco all I see are small, ma-and-pa joints. Tax-wise, the state and city governments may be a little overbearing but we've got a great and savvy clientele that would never dine at McDonald’s or shop at Walmart. Customers and shopkeepers are not only friendly and independent but have a wonderful sense of humor too. Just check out some of these business names.






          


When every entrepreneur employs rhymes and puns, it can be hard to find the witty title that sticks. Case in point: Foggy Doggy was already taken. L

      I worried about being too showy with this post as most of my readers in Boston remain under 7 feet of snow. But the fact remains: Spring does come to California in February! California readers, has this always been the case or is climate change the go-to villain?       We're not immune, in the Golden State, to "Global Weirding." Los Angeles in fact is to receive more rain than San Francisco over the next ten days. Up here in fact it did not rain one drop in January - an almost exact replica of 2014. Business owners and farmers are getting jittery as this drought continues into its 4th year and thus state government is getting creative. Desalination right now is the hot-ticket-idea to secure water flow in California, something that countries like Israel have been investing in for decades.       At least the authorities won't neglect Golden Gate Park, a well-watered oasis that should really be sandy scrubland. The Soundtrack to Grief and Other Forms of Education

      Even dealing with the muck of a thing like loss, I still feel like my life in San Francisco follows some sort of narrative arc dusted with a magical synchronicity. Clearly I've tried many things that haven't worked in easing the feelings around the death of my dad: new potions, old vices and general avoidance of life events. With enough curiosity and counsel from my better angels, however, I've found more skillful avenues for treating the subject like engaging in education (at a group level), reading up on astrology and listening to music.       For education, I've joined a grief group at the Institute of Aging in the city's Richmond District. It's a group of 12 of us who will hopefully become friends for life. The facilitator, Patrick Arbore , is an award-winning saint who started the Friendship Line, an alternative to the usual-suicide-prevention-hotline for elderly Californians.
