The Magic of Magnolias

I worried about being too showy with this post as most of my readers in Boston remain under 7 feet of snow. But the fact remains: Spring does come to California in February! California readers, has this always been the case or is climate change the go-to villain?

We're not immune, in the Golden State, to "Global Weirding." Los Angeles in fact is to receive more rain than San Francisco over the next ten days. Up here in fact it did not rain one drop in January - an almost exact replica of 2014. Business owners and farmers are getting jittery as this drought continues into its 4th year and thus state government is getting creative. Desalination right now is the hot-ticket-idea to secure water flow in California, something that countries like Israel have been investing in for decades.

At least the authorities won't neglect Golden Gate Park, a well-watered oasis that should really be sandy scrubland. These photos were taken at the SF Botanical Gardens, a 55-acre arboretum showcasing 8,000 different plants from around the world. Most specimens are from other countries that share our Mediterranean climate: like Chile, countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the Western and Southern coasts of South Africa and Australia. A Mediterranean Climate has warm to hot, dry summers with mild to cool, rainy winters and can be located between 30 and 45 degrees latitude either north or south of the equator. If you want to be spoiled and piss off your humid continental climate brethren, then live in a Mediterranean climate and start a blog!

Beyond the Mediterranean Climate specimens, the botanical garden does feature a Temperate Asia section and a Meso-American Cloud Forest as well as a Coastal Redwood Grove. This place is my new serenity spot and is a must for any tourists who want a piggyback experience to their Haight-Ashbury day. It's best to arrive by 9 a.m. in the morning to beat the crowds (or earlier as the Gardens open at 7:30 a.m. every day).

The Botanical Garden's big display through mid-March is the fragrant Magnolia Tree. The state flower for both Louisiana and Mississippi, the Magnolia is also a fitting tree to welcome in 2015's Sheep, the new face of the Chinese New Year. Magnolias and Sheep are bringers of beauty and delicacy who carry an underlayer of perseverance to all they encounter. 2015 will be a divine year for love and romance and hitting the Magnolias exhibit is a great date idea.

So let beauty and gentleness carry you through the year but also remember, no matter the number of blizzards, to never give up!
