"Navigating Life by the Light of the Moon" with Guest Author, Tommi West

The seasonal shift from the warmth of summer to the crisp fall always feels overly
dramatic and strangely dangerous to me. I adore autumn and the festivities of
Halloween and Thanksgiving, and yet I also experience an uneasy sense of dread.

Daylight savings disrupts my body’s natural rhythm. I’m hungry before lunch and my
dogs are confused when we go for a walk. I’m reminded that my normal daily routine is
simply an illusion perpetrated by the clocks that surround me. I suddenly feel out of
sync with ordinary Time-Space; I’ve entered the mysterious landscape of a dream.

In times of uncertainty, I turn to my tarot cards for guidance. With the recent
supermoon and lunar eclipse events, the wisdom of Moon card (number 18 in the Major
arcana) seems especially appropriate right now.

Here’s the Moon card from the Thoth tarot deck:

Compare this imagery with the Moon card from the more traditional Rider-Waite-Smith
tarot deck:

While contemplating the symbols in the Moon card, there’s a sense of transmutation, of
going on a journey. It appears there is only one way forward, but it involves crossing a
threshold – moving past two rather ominous towers and two gate keepers along the
way. The trip feels challenging and the terrain looks otherworldly, especially when
viewed by the silvery light of the Moon. Moonlight casts odd shadows, making ordinary
objects look unfamiliar and strange. In the darkness, intuition is the only reliable guide.
Some parts of the road ahead are hidden and the path is not always as it appears.

And what is this curious looking creature with an exoskeleton that appears to be making
the trip? Is it a lobster, a crayfish, or a scarab beetle? The traveler is definitely not a
mammal, it is a much more simple form of life… and yet this primitive being has
inhabited the Earth much longer than all of mankind. It embodies ancient knowledge.

Shall we take this journey of the Soul, with only the reflective light of the Moon to guide
us? And what will be gained by trekking up to the top of the mountain?

The Moon’s gravitational pull affects Earth’s tides, much in the same way that the
undulating landscape shows the ups and downs of the road ahead. The symmetry of
cycles suggests that we’ve taken this road before, but there’s a chance of straying off
course if we don’t tread carefully, with strong intention.

The Tower card in the tarot represents abrupt, cataclysmic change that tears down old
belief systems that are no longer valid. Here, we see two similar towers in the distance,
which are sure to shake up our understanding of life. To walk between them is to pass
through the barrier of the subconscious. It is a journey of awakening from inhabiting our
physical form’s survival mind to a spiritual evolution of introspection. We feel pulled to
bravely march in the dead of night, towards the darkest hour of the Soul, to dive deeply
into the unknown realms of the Self.

Is this all just a dream? An elaborate illusion? Or are we simply deluding ourselves?

The Moon card invites us to trust our intuition, to move into the twilight zone towards
life’s true purpose. And it whispers: What scares you the most? What are the patterns in your life that re-emerge with each new cycle? How far do you dare to tread to learn your deepest, darkest secrets?

The courage to face these truths results in a new understanding of our place in the
world. There’s so much more to reality than what lies on the surface. Exploring
unknown realms reminds us that life is a construction of the Divine. We are living proof
of this magical manifestation.

Take comfort in this time of uncertainty: our evolution is inevitable. Revel in the
mysterious. It’s normal to feel disoriented. When we trust our inner knowing during this
exploration of the hidden Self, the light of wisdom is revealed from within. Our
extraordinary subconscious guides us, if we open up our conscious mind and follow it.
